RIC VI, LONDINIUM 284, CONSTANTINE, REVERSE VARIETY

OBVERSE

CONSTANTINVSPFAVG [CONSTANTINVS P F AVG]; bust r., laur., cuir.

REVERSE

SOLIINVI-C-TOCOMITI [SOLI INVICTO COMITI]; Sol stg. r., head l., chlamys draped over l. shoulder and hanging behind, r. raised, l. holding up globe. Star in left field. PLN in exergue.

NOT IN RIC

REVERSE VARIETY. RIC describes Sol's chlamys as "draped over l. shoulder", not draped and hanging behind (with exception for LONDINIUM 286; see footnote 3 on p. 140). Listed in Huvelin (no. 198-198b). Note that Huvelin does not list this obverse with reverse described in RIC. However, lists Sol standing left, with chlamys draped over l. shoulder and hanging behind (see example of Huvelin, plate 15, no. 198c).

It is unclear whether description of Sol from this issue "or facing, head l." means the same as "or stg. r., head l." (probably not, according to footnote 2 on p. 140). It is also unclear whether the description "chlamys spread" (see: footnote 3 on p. 140 to LONDINIUM 286) means the same as "chlamys hanging behind". This issue obviously needs a thorough rearrangement, but the present author decided to point out the major inconsistencies in RIC. See also: CORRIGENDA, VOL. VI, p. 140.
